He wasn’t really defending her. He just said that hiring a publicist to slam someone is something you can do. He didn’t really make an accusation or even name a name. I think it falls short of defending anyone specifically.

I think he meant, “I want to kick that guy’s ass but if I’d seen him do it, I could.” Sometimes “there’s not much I can do” really means “I can’t do everything I want to do”.
