IIRC on average people who are acquitted on grounds of insanity spend more years locked up than people convicted of murder. They're just in a mental hospital rather than a prison.

I find activity helpful, but only if a) it involves some kind of physical or manual work, b) there is a low-key goal, and c) failure isn't really a factor. For me that's almost always gardening.
