I've never seen The Birdcage, mostly because I had seen La Cage Aux Folles a couple times already (thanks, high school French class) and assumed that the American remake would be pandering, like you said. Now it's one of the many Robin Williams movies I've never seen that will be really hard to see for the first time…

Seriously. The fact that he's now led two $200+ million tentpole flicks with a collective wet fart for box office returns is just evidence that the American public doesn't know what's good for us, I guess.

The rhetoric that goes around about how audiences just don't want to see movies with female leads any time one isn't a huge smash is so frustrating.

I doubt there's much out there in the way of statistics, but I can assure you that women can be just as sexually coercive and violent as men, and that includes lesbians.
