LoL... Similar case here. only I was hoe sick for a month. I had the counter numbers on the vcr memorized for all the flying scenes. I was probably the only 8th grade girl who couldn't have cared less about Tom Cruise. I wanted a Tomcat.

Pretty much. Saw more than a few similar things in my marshal days, and it was always someone not bothering to pay attention to the abundant signals. Herr Viper there managed to not notice the previous cars' brake lights, the yellow flags, or a safety car. That's some impressive tunnel vision.
Emergency vehicles are positioned that way deliberately to protect the workers, because drivers pull dumb moves like this on a not infrequent basis. More simply, while hitting a safety vehicle is expensive and embarrassing, hitting a worker can be fatal.
" In my racing experience once a corner worker is within eye shot (the one we see in the film clearly is) then that is the flag."
Negative, ghostrider. The pattern is full.
What they don't mention was that Hawthorn was supposedly racing against and just passed Rob Walker, who was driving a 300SL.
Actually, those were part of the problem. The Jaguars had developed disc brakes, but the M-Bs were still using drum brakes. The air brakes were added to help compensate for the lack of power in the drums. Hence, Hawthorn could brake much quicker and sharper than Levegh in the M-B.
Yup. And they were shredded in the press for it. The general sentiment was that if anyone should've been extremely cautious about cars repeatedly going airborne at LeMans, it was Mercedes-Benz.
Absolutely. Performance wise, I'll give you gas is better than diesel. My pro-argument for diesel is versus a daily driver hybrid (in other words, a Prius.) I so many people where I live think the Prius is the only reliable and highly efficient car option. I will continue to believe a diesel is a better…
Slightly ot, but I always laugh a little when I see a picture of a Le Mans start. Way back B.C. (before children), my parents had a pair of 356s and did tons of stuff with SCCA and PCA.
Further karma for Hawthorne-he was killed while supposedly trying to outrun a Mercedes on public roads.
On a side note, Emanuele Pirro pulled the workers at the crash aside for a toast afterwards:
Exactly. However, if you'll recall, they weren't just testing fuel efficiency. The Prius was a piece crap by comparison in every other way, and the efficiency difference was negligible. Also worth noting was the fact they had to stop the test early because the Prius was out of gas.
If they do, all they need is one more miracle and Audi Sport will be a candidate for sainthood...
There might also have been a few docs rechecking things, since they couldn't believe what they were seeing. :)
God bless modern safety standards and German engineers.
Can't speak for France, but you better believe it's true on the Autobahnen....
petrol (UK) = gas (US).
The '70s called. They want their assumptions back. Go look up the C & D article where they tested a E350 Bluetec vs. a Prius.
