I suspect Gabaldon picked pretty much every single characteristic she could think of to label Randall as a definite villain, so after his actions in the first book, it was hard for him to do anything even more shocking, beyond assaulting a child.

I do agree, though, that there is a problem if people are shrugging off the other scenes solely because of the gender of the victim.
One of my main problems is the actor who plays Fergus is 14. The actress who plays Mary is 21, and Sophie Turner was 18 or 19 when her scene was filmed.
As I've mentioned in an earlier comment thread on here, I think the storyline about Fergus could have been preserved but without showing anything.
