The Makarov was replaced about 20 years ago. All three calibers the AK is made in (7.62x39, 5.45x39, & 5.56x45) are being replaced, not just the AKM.

A new high school in the district I graduated from in 2010 doesn't have lockers or books, they have iPads. The school board must have known something like this was coming down the pipe from Apple or they probably wouldn't have made such a radical departure using a device that has only been around for a few years.
