This sounds like a web version of the long time companion for the office I work in Wheel O' Yum ( http://www.wheeloyum.com/ ).
The only time anyone in my office ever sees or uses an auto reply is when that person is going to be away for more than a day, and it always contains contact information for certain applications or projects.

@David: He's got a point. Don't hit the dog in any situation. As numerous people have stated, dogs are creatures of habit, and if they start to associate you reaching for them with getting hit, then they'll very likely become at the least afraid of you, the worst, aggressive towards you.
My wife and I just bought a Beagle about 3 weeks ago (she's now 11 weeks old).
