It sounds like the swap was from his most recently stolen vehicle into a stashed vehicle that had been previously stolen. When they ran the plates, it showed up as having been reported stolen, which seems unlikely if it had just been stolen.

As a stolen vehicle, it would definitely be held for evidence.

This goes beyond the conduct that you can waive. Typically it has to be related to the activity in question. Getting blasted with water while a ski lift isn’t really the type of risk you expect from skiing. 

I bought trash bags yesterday.  I didn’t kill anyone, as far as you know.

Having the benefit of being an armchair commenter, I would have tried to hang out with another car in those circumstances. Nonetheless, it’s an unfortunate outcome. 

Look I’m not one to defend the police, but I’m pretty sure fleeing them in one stolen car followed by a switch into another stolen car constitutes probable cause for a search.

Getting SUPER mad at a grieving family who might not be totally reasonable right now is why the internet exists though.

Yes, sad for them and I’m sure they’re just looking for someone to blame for their loved one’s bad decision. And since the media is always eager to amplify criticism of law enforcement, they’re encouraged to do so.

I don’t see how this is the county’s fault. It’s pretty basic knowledge that you don’t leave your vehicle in a snowstorm. Sounds like the family is lashing out because they don’t want to recognize their son/brother made a poor choice. Sad stuff for sure

I looked at one in person and I didn’t even think to look at where the backup cam is...that’s not great, especially since any situation I’d have the tailgate down I’m more likely to have obstructions in the rearview mirror.
