Definitely avoid BIOS updates unless everything is messed up (and rare other occasions).

No worries, cydia is all web based so you can see awkwardly formatted pages in a normal browser if you need in the future :)

There are commands to make network drives work with it - but he'd want to be careful setting it up to not accidentally make a whole drive the Time Machine - but a separate partition should work.

I was thinking something similar - a NAS / Apache server for my house. That should hold over my itch to build a full Server for at least a few months.
