I thought paying a retainer is just prepaying a lawyer for future work, and they use up that retainer as they do more and more work (so it’s still in the end costing Google money to pay lawyers). Even if the lawyers were just on salary, it still means devoting their time and effort to something when they could be

I actually think Google look at it’s legal expenses for the case and decided paying the people hush money to shut up and go away was less than winning the case in court (which I think they would eventually do). I doubt Damore or any of the other people are paying money out of their pockets as typically these type of

I’m pretty sure his lawyers we working for free in return for a cut of the winnings. I actually think Google just spent the money they would have spent on lawyers and gave it to the people suing as you will note that part of the private settlement with Google says they can’t talk about it from now on.

I’m pretty sure they all just got a LOT of money to be quiet in a settlement. While, the lawsuit had no merit, it would still have gone to court... and the cost of having a team of lawyers, each billing at $500 an hour of work, it is likely the cost of going to trial and winning was less than paying these guys some

It’s definitely possible it depends on the manufacturers - I just sat in a demo car as part of an Android Auto showcase. Just to be clear we are talking about an Android Auto system where everything is handled by the phone (all the menus and options are being broadcasted to the dummy display via HDMI cable). I’m not

If you actually read the source article... the headline is completely wrong. Factory resets actually do clear your data - the problem is that there are situations where owners don’t always realize they need to do it. Like having your car serviced/upgraded and/or when a car is scrapped after an accident.

Furthermore...

This is all Android Auto... it’s kind of cool.. but it is also noticeably laggy because it takes time for the car to talk to the phone... so every time you tap a button/screen in the car there is a half second delay before the screen responds.

Technically, he bought the CPAP machines and is having his team try to build medical ventilators from Tesla car parts although I doubt they will be of use. I’m pro-Tesla/SpaceX but I think Musk is very wrong on this issue.

Can you monitor ar live stream remotely and/or scrub through your footage over the last day or so in real-time? I tried my friends local solution and connecting to the camera and then trying to quickly scan through the last 24 hour to search for motion activity was incredibly laggy.

I’ve added Book of the New Sun to my reading list my list thanks to your post!

As I mentioned above... GM can’t reopen the Lordstown factory because they don’t own it anymore. They sold it in 2019 (Trump even tweeted about it saying how it was a great thing in May 2019).

More importantly GM doesn’t even own the Lordstown plant anymore, they sold it to Rivian at the end of 2019. Trump even tweets about it on May 8, 2019

Cool thanks. I liked Forever War and as I’ve mentioned I’m no longer looking for books to blow my minds... just something  to escape for the world that we live in for a little while and I have never liked grimdark stuff.

I also really like Gideon the Ninth, it was refreshingly wacky. I personally liked that is bucked the recent “world building” (i.e. lets set of a profitable book series) trend and instead went for characters that you find fun and entertaining to follow. That’s not to say there isn’t any world building, just that it is

I understand your use case and I agree if you needed a quick hardcopy, then it would be great.

My point is that I haven’t needed a hard copy of something in years. In fact, for years the first thing I do when I get a hardcopy is take a photo of it with my phone (or scan it if I really want good quality), store it on my

I do think Musk is wrong... but I think his personal history has given him false confirmation bias... after he made his first fortune at Paypal. Musk started SpaceX, he flew to Russia with some of his executives to buy old ICBM rocket engines for use in his rockets... only to have Russians literally spit at him.

On the

I’m ok with it fading as younger kids don’t really care (I get like a pound of art drawings a week from school that we just take photos of and recycle after a 1 week waiting period).

I don’t know of many instances where a physical photo print (particularly a low resolution, monochrome one) is desired (the only recent ca

“same stuff that cash registers spit out en masse: simple black and white thermal paper.”

I thought they found that cash registers receipt had a BPA which mimicked estrogen and so was specifically warned not to be touched by children (I kind of remember cashiers touching it regularly are suppose to wear gloves).

I agree specifically for COVID-19 as time/resources are limited. However, historically a lot of major advances in science/engineering typically came from an outsider how looked at things from a different viewpoint - now like 99% of those ideas are worthless... but the major breakthrough come from out of the box

To be fair, waymo already has a patent on its self driving cars to identify and response to a police officer/construction worker waving through traffic and even have a video of a car doing it in real life (broken traffic light with police handling traffic... You can find it on YouTube)
