The alternative would be that you wouldn't be able to to get anything at all because all your grocery stores would be close. Financially, it doesn't really make sense to paying people to stand at the registers from 10PM-6AM when they are so few shoppers, most of whom are only buying a few items.
I read "Instant: The Story of Polaroid" and it was a pretty interesting read (I got it in book form which has some decent photos as well). In general, I have no nostalgia for old stuff and by the time I came around Polaroids were a shadow of it's former self, however... the book did a great job at showing how Edwin…
I agree the movie was disappointing... but the writers of Interstellar were the same people who did Inception and the Dark Knight trilogy... so clearly they aren't dumb. Just like how the physics of Intersteller felt contrived despite having an astrophysicists who wrote a book on the science of the movie.
I agree it was a bit contrived to have a planetary system orbiting relatively close to a black hole. However, it's not due to "dumb people making sci-fi movies" the person who came up with the idea of a planetary system surrounding a black hole is Kip Thorne, Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics Emertius at…

I agree that digital streaming is a definitely priced at a premium compared to physical distribution - especially when purchased a la carte versus subscription.
According to the article, there was no pre-programmed strategy... the program was just given the rules of the game and started making random legal moves (bet, raise, call, fold, etc)... they had it play trillions of trillions of hands against itself, until it "learned" what play in what situation is the most likely to…
That's what we thought... until
It's not an analogy, it is a method of figuring out tasks are worth doing if you main goal is to want to save money. Using your own hourly income is merely a way of adjusting it for your current income.
"My point is that if I assigned every little action I did with a value, I would likely not do half the stuff I do."
Actually, I am also on a salary income with no OT. but I personally think assigning value to time according your effective hourly income is useful. The exactly value may not be our effective hourly wage ... but I think it is a good starting point.
True... but you still have to return the DVD... that's at least another 10 minute round trip, so $4 for 15 mins = $16/hour. For me personally, that's not worth my time. However I'm not saying I never save money (why I mentioned that I cook my own food and make my own coffee).
A city block is roughly 1/8 of a mile, so you are walking 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile. Assuming average walking speed 3 mph. Your door to door round trip is 10-15 mins, plus putting on/taking off winter clothing. It say that's still 15-20 mins total time. BTW... Redbox just increased it's regular DVD rental to $1.50 a day.
I used to worry about saving $4 on things like that... but then I realized that $4 for 20 mins of time = $12 an hour. So effectively you are paying yourself minimum wage for "delivery service." This was worthwhile exchange when I was a student and when I was in my 20's. However, now if I just spend 30 more minutes at…
While personally I agree I prefer using my full-frame dSLR as a video camera... for one thing all full-frames are well over $1000 for the body alone. Let alone including a 30-300mm F3.4 lenses like the camcorders listed above. The Panasonic GH4 shoots 4k, but is m4/3 and that costs $1700 for the body alone as well.…
While I agree that the latest phones as well as GoPro have great video quality and I personally doubt I would get a camcorder unless it is sub-400 and offer 4k video or 1080p at 240fps, I have two words that make them useful to some people "powered zoom."
I used to be very skeptical of 4K video as well... until I saw a live 4K video in person. Then I was skeptical that it would gain mass appeal until everyone got 4K TVs... until I saw a GoPro 4K video downsampled to 1080p and it looks really good as well. I didn't think it would make such a difference either but I…
Trolls... got it.
Actually... technology did affect how "great writers" composed their words:
