Season 6 from 2009 is on Netflix and it’s interesting to see how far Top Chef and cooking has changed over the years. Most of the chefs are dude bros and the women are trying to be dude bros too to fit in. The majority of the judges were white men, it took 6 episodes to even have a female judge. They weren’t very open

Was glad to see the Monona Terrace getting love this week. The UW Law School holds its graduation ceremonies there, so the building will always hold a special place in my heart. Plus, as noted this week, the design and the setting is absolutely beautiful.

Having rewatched all the seasons, I certainly can’t recall any eliminations where some sort of bottom was skipped entirely.

Lloyd Wright?

Has there ever been a time where a dish was so bad that the judges completely skipped the bottom 3 and just sent the team packing? Wow. Kaleena and Alisha definitely earned it though. They were doomed from the start and both knew it

Seems clear that Toranaga’s plan is to march two armies to Osaka freely, without suspicion. And pretending to surrender is the way. I just don’t know if his brother is in on it. He’d have to be, right? Or does he take him out once they get to Osaka? I assumed he planned it with his brother—why march your entire army

This show has done a really great job explaining things. I do find myself wondering about the hairstyles on the show. Does the way some shave parts of their heads mean something? Some men have longer hair in a ponytail like Yabushige and Toranada (whose ponytail points upward! This is hard to do even with the advances

That scene where Hiromatsu commits seppuku really left me gutted. See what I did there?

Ya, the recapper has this wrong. The seppuku was not meant to get his underlings to keep fighting. It was to really, REALLY convince even his own people that he was serious about surrendering and getting their pledge to do so as well. He needs this to convince Ishido and Ochiba as that signed pledge was what was

Holy shit was that Hiromatsu scene intense. This show just keeps reaching new levels of fantastic

I love this take! Thank you for sharing.

Ochiba also says at the start before Ishido proposes marriage that she won’t celebrate or buy that Toranaga isn’t up to something until Toranaga is actually there with his forehead touching the floor in submission. The Hiromatsu thing convinced her

Last point, I think Ochiba genuflecting is meant to show that she’s fully bought that Toranaga is surrending and that the plan succeeded. She was being told that she picked the wrong one between Toranaga and Ishido and that Ishido wasn’t cut out to win this war, all while she doesn’t trust Toranaga and assumes he must

I wonder how much longer AV Club will be on the Kinja platform. I think it took Lifehacker a few months until they switched. The Takeout is still on Kinja too, but the comments have been disabled and the output has dropped a ton.

It may have been for the character, but she definitely did it through the entire series, it wasn’t all the time, but I 100% noticed it.  I honestly haven’t seen her in enough stuff to even know if it was natural or not lol.

All I know is that the AV Club is impossible to browse on a phone.

That’s something she just did for this particular character; when she was having her “conversations” with her dead father her droopy lip and mealy mouthed delivery were things he mocked her for. Kate Winslet is just THAT good.

It was pretty good, but not pretty x 2 good.

The key toss was very funny.

The final shot of the seven of them arguing manners was exactly the right way to end it and how I want to imagine them forever.
