She never once tried to extract herself from the situation. Her own account never uses the word “assaulted” until after the fact when her friends convince her it was, nor does she use “fear,” “afraid,” or “scared.”

Grace could leave with no repercussions. None. That’s different than Weinstein, Lauer, LouisCK, Kevin Spacey, etc. In fact, when she decided she didn’t like it, she did leave.

I AM giving her empathy. You’re not giving HIM any. This is a misunderstanding, one that happens frustratingly often, but it isn’t the act of a villain as you’re making it out to be. He wasn’t a predator. He was a guy that didn’t properly read the situation.

She doesn’t even say that he ignored her. She says he did not notice, or he ignored her.

How did he coerce her?

This wasn’t date rape. She wasn’t drunk. She wasn’t there under any false pretenses. Could it have turned violent? Maybe, but he gave no impression of that and her account doesn’t hint at it. He was horny. She also seemed to be.

Again, she never said that she was cared and sad. She never said no. It wasn’t until the very end, and at that point he called her a car. He stopped when she made it clear. Prior to that, she thinks she was sending a clear message, but it’s very likely she was not.

Yeah, this is impossible. She could actually use the app to hear exactly what was said to order that, but that would require some form of follow-up and a commitment to getting the facts right, rather than the “narrative,” so she’ll never do it.

No chance he thinks he’s racist. In general, no one thinks they’re racist. Racists are bad guys in movies who basically twirl mustaches. People like Trump think they’re honest and rational and realistic and looking at the data.

In fairness, 2 of those 3 weren’t very big on what America is these days, and the running theme of the character is struggling to reconcile the America he loved with the America we have.

This was always the best of AVClub. It lacked the snark that was signature of the best of AVClub, but from a pure content perspective it was unrivaled.
