I remember when I thought Chasing Amy was the beginning of a true explosion in Smith’s talent.  There was a bizarre time when Smith’s name could be put alongside Quentin Tarantino and PT Anderson.  The 90s were crazy, man.

Why I hate reality TV and meme culture, summarized neatly.

Sigh, when will Rosario Dawson get the vehicle she deserves?

It seems quite strange, I agree.  I’m genuinely confused by the hostility.

I don’t tell anyone what to say. And I try to be open minded and learn. (I actually I agree I’m shitty! I want to be a better person.) Until I saw this, it would not have occurred to me that someone would be mad that I might sing along to Mos Def or Common alone in my car or my house. That’s seriously upsetting?

I don’t use the “n-word” in public settings, but if I’m alone at home or in my car, I definitely sing/rap it along with songs. (I can’t believe anyone would object to that.) I have lots of friends who love rap, many of whom are not black - most of them absolutely believe that the word can be said publicly when

The point is that there are going to be people who defend the accused and those found guilty. Sometimes they’re right to! Sometimes people are wrongfully tried, and wrongfully convicted. My point on this issue is that no one should expect total acceptance of their position on anything. (So oddly, I think we agree.)

Whet

This isn’t all or nothing. If we want total victory, then nothing ends. Nazis have supporters still. So does the Klan, Francisco Franco, ISIS, Boko Haram, and the Khmer Rouge. You can be an actual, convicted criminal and still have fans. (See Cosby, Don King, G. Gordon Liddy, Rush Limbaugh, the list goes on.)  The

Iron-clad?  That’s nonsense.

Holly Rice?  So that’s why we kept getting shots of “Holly” and “Arroz” streets?  Cute.

I once had a decent friend who was half Hutu and half Tutsi.  He lived through the genocide and his family got out safely.  The stories he told haunt me and changed my views on so much of this.  The biggest point he made?  That the Rwandan genocide was even more complex than we understood.  We saw millions slaughtered

Not rigidly annualized, no.  That’s the gimmick of a movie and art.  But regularly?  Depends on how you define societies. Entire nations? I can’t think of many. Regions and ethnic enclaves? I think so. The Jewish experience in Russia was basically this chaotic for decades, as was the black experience in post Civil War

For me, no.  I think it’s that he comes off a bit arrogant and vain.  This might be projection - as a man, I feel like women do about Anne Hathaway (who I like a lot).  He is just irksome.  I think I’d like him more if he was lower profile for sure.

Nope. I was coming to write the same thing. I think the thing that bugs me is that he is doing this important, consequential thing, but making himself a star in the process. It’s off-putting at the least. But he’s write about Jackie. That movie was awful.

Masking a critical column in irony really just makes the message diluted.  I THINK you’re down on MacDonald and where he’s going lately, but there was way too much snark to see it clearly.

Referencing Milhouse van Houten will get you nowhere everywhere round these parts.  So what was your actual goal?

So we can increase our sex rate by telling our spouses it will deter risks of mass shootings?  Interesting sell.

Also, @Zhimbo, that may be the best screen name I’ve seen in decades.

Hopefully someone makes your dream a reality, Zhimbo!  We can hope!

@Jinpayn seems like a real douche. I don’t mean that his ideas are bad, but that he seems like someone obsessed with becoming famous, and I sure hope he flames out hard.
