The problem is few women will willingly work as prostitutes even if the job is safe and legal. There’s always going to be far more demand than supply so there’s always going to be sex slavery. When prostitution is illegal it lessens demand and makes it easier for police to find and rescue enslaved women.

Even in countries where prostitution is legal and regulated sex trafficking is a huge concern. In the Netherlands in Germany it’s estimated that well over half of sex workers (some estimates up to 85%) are foreign women from less-affluent countries. If 85% of the sex workers are trafficked, the regulations aren't protecting the sex workers at all.

People keep this stuff secret for decades. One of my closest friends since high school told me she was molested as a kid. I had no idea, and she has only been able to talk about it in the last year or so, almost 25 years after the attack.

When I think about my friends who are survivors, the 1 in 5 number starts to seem low. And that’s just the friends who were close enough to talk about it.
