They had some good ideas, but the way that we county up the electoral college currently is pretty far off the original intent.
Actually it has less to do with balancing the states on population lines and everything to do with keeping unsuitable candidates from becoming president. If you read the The Federalist Papers, you can get a contemporary defense of the different parts of the constitution and what they were thinking when they came up…

Honestly, I think more people would vote if they didn’t know they lived in a “red” or “blue” state thanks to the electoral college. We have local representation through the congress and senate (theoretically), so why do we have to kowtow every four years to a few counties in Ohio and Florida?
We quit doing all the Turkey Day visiting/cooking crap and just enjoy a nice day off at home. It’s awesome!
