During his initial introduction I was half-expecting the handsome stranger to try and kill Joan as soon as he turned her back. Watson had just pissed off a drug kingpin, after all, and he did use the old "help me find my friend's escaped bearded dragon" line…

It was good to get his appearance out of the way early on, the kind of fanservice that acts as a welcoming handshake to returning fans.

First thing I thought of, too.

Another funny echo was that Reese transferred from Narcotics to the Homicide task force so that he could work with Fusco. Which is exactly what happened to Fusco in the first season, in more or less the same way (earning a commendation while helping an irrelevant number).

The writers hedged their bets by saying he was also known as Conquest.

Both hats are rumored to have been cast in a reboot of Steven J. Cannell's 1992 series The Hat Squad. The network is allegedly also in talks with James Spader's hat from The Blacklist.
