Horses really can’t run long distances at top speed. It’s amazing that horse even got there, much less in any condition to carry multiple riders back.
It was a poorly planned mission. They could have jumped on dragon-back, flew north of the wall, snatched one from the ground by its shoulders, and flew back, all within a day or two. Instead they wasted valuable time, energy, and lives.
