Easy now. What I’m saying is not ludicrous. The infrastructure to support AVs will have to be more sophisticated than pebbles and goop with bits of metal stuck into it here and there left to deteriorate until it’s got holes in it. I would wager that this will increase costs.

Perhaps in your part of the country this is true, but to large portions of the population this is all very relevant. Cars are already starting to park themselves in underground car parks by themselves with no one at the wheel. Lunatics are letting ‘autopilot’ drive their cars for them. Urban traffic is a disaster.

Nah, it will look nicer but infrastructure costs will be *way* higher.

I find that the part that is hard to get ones head around is that everything will have to change. You won’t *buy* an autonomous car. Just the legal side of it is insanely complex as you are no longer in control of the vehicle, systems are. Things like proper maintenance takes on a whole other level of significance.

[don’t feed]

That’s the truly interesting part. Ownership, payment and liability change fundamentally with a real autonomous transportation system in place. I’ll keep a fire-breather with a wheel for fun, but I’m 100% for fixing the tragic joke that is commuting traffic.

Ummm... Have the engineers considered snow? Is this a real question? Check out the farm and mine automation stuff to get an idea of how these systems work in rural/agricultural/brutal settings.

Almost gave you a star, but not enough blue.

But mostly, I like working on cars, and rescuing a vehicle that would otherwise be scrapped soon due to deferred maintenance and poorly installed mods makes me feel good inside.

To the media juggernaut science=tech=gadgets most of the time, sadly.

no way on god’s green earth I should ever be put in charge of a science website.

Plus, the ‘ground-effect’ (air pushing off the ground) reduces the amount of thrust needed. Might even improve responsiveness and control.

Yup. Falling out of the sky is pretty near the top of the list of ‘things that probably won’t end well’

Up ain’t across... Totally different deal.

Novelty? I literally (yes, literally) can’t believe it’s real (is it?) which pretty much puts it more into ‘revolutionary’ than ‘novelty’ in my book. Of all the recent ‘jet-pack’ attempts (that weird but cool fan-bike, the amazing Mr Rossi, etc.) this is hands down the most legit looking thing yet. That was the first

Made me laugh pretty hard, you said ‘despite’

Your post was not ambiguous, sorry if I offended you. Being able to poke fun at each other is important, I understood your meaning and meant no disrespect.

Cool. Yeah I get where you’re coming from, for sure, and agree. The words you typed can be interpreted to say both things, though. Just being a wiseass! I’m a fan of Hamilton’s driving, but find his ‘media-presence’ and bitchiness pretty irritating. My take is that if Hammy can get kicked in the teeth for the next

Yep. Using nonsense statistics to make a point is infuriating. Pro-tip: If the numbers are easy (5 and 500, for example) the stats are almost certainly useless.

Not sure if you meant to, but, you’re saying he’s so good his car has to break for others to beat him...
