The reason games were hard during that Era, was that developers were still used to making games for Arcades. And in Arcades, games were hard because they were suppose to suck up quarters.

I grew up with games like this. And frankly, now that I'm in my third decade of playing games, I have to say, I much prefer the "gentler" approach of today's games. To me, gaming before the 16 bit generation was a bit of a dark age.
