@addicuss: They did use OS3 on the 3G, you can tell by the background behind the bottom row of apps. OS4 has a reflective plane, and OS3 has a metal mesh texture.
I think my favorite single use tool is my avocado slicer. I perfectly slices the avocado, and doesn't leave any behind in the skin.
We shouldn't think of this as mouse vs trackpad. It's mouse + keyboard + trackpad. Much like my wacom doesn't replace my mouse.

It may have taken them longer because there is a fair bit of customizing and adjusting before you get into the full swing of reading on a new device. I think I read about the same speed on my Kindle and on a printed book. Here are some benefits I've found to reading on my Kindle, and may also apply to the iPad.

Just FYI, as a 3D artist, I use Wingdings all the time to create arrows and other odd objects.
I think FaceTime with people you don't see often makes sense. My wife and mother in law have been video chatting for years over Messenger. My mother in law lives in another country. When they both have iPhone 4's it'll be nice because they won't be tied to their desks/laptops.
