How is the Jeep Cherokee not on this list? They are available with AWD or 4WD and can be optioned for under $30k.

Actually, at the time, Honda/Acura was on top of its game in performance imports in the 1990s. Those asking for a Japanese super car certainly weren't expecting it to come from Lexus or Infiniti in the 1990s.

I've been thinking the same thing. Ford today is what Honda used to be in the 1990s; fast affordable and reliable. I wish Honda (and Acura in particular) would get back into making performance vehicles rather than boring people movers.

3 series cost twice as much as the Fusion. Different class of car.

Ford has become what Honda (and Acura) was in the 1990s. Performance oriented affordable cars that are fund to drive and look good. It is a shame that Honda (and Acura) don't put out performance cars anymore.

SH-AWD is one of the best AWD systems on the market.

To be fair, I've driven an MDX with SH-AWD and that thing can really hoon for its size. The MDX is a pretty massive crossover, but the SH-AWD system keeps them really nimble. I was surprised when I took one out for a drive.

The coming 2016 Explorer looks fantastic. I haven't liked most of the earlier generations though.

The W220 also changed in the game in inspiring the W203, whcih was itself a game-changer for the entry-level luxury car. So the W220 was both changed-by-the-game and a game-changer-by-proxy.

This is true, but you can throw the Jeep Grand Cherokee into this same discussion. It started truck-based true off-roading SUV and turned uni-body. Now they even have a Summit model that is more like an MDX than it is an offroading vehicle.
