Well, you’ve got to remember that in Matthau’s heyday, guest shots on variety shows were walk-on-and-read-your-punchline affairs. The SNL gig was probably described to him as “the modern Laugh-In”.  Mugging for the camera was practically the definition of a guest appearance.
