This was not a shocking twist.

Does the book ever go into detail about Alan? I kinda wish the show revealed more about his motives. Was he aware of Adora’s poisoning the children? Was he in denial? A case of folie á deux perhaps? Him lying to Richard about Camille being off with her friends kinda hints that he was enabling Adora...

The actress is so good, the flash lasted for mere seconds, but when she said “I’m incorrigible too, only Mama doesn’t know it.” I was like, ding ding ding we have a sociopath on our hands, people.

Agreed. It was pretty obvious from the beginning that Amma had issues. How quickly she got attached to Camille, how jealous she got, and how she would lash out at Camille. The major examples being the lollipop in Camille’s hair, and Calhoun Day, both times when she was paying more attention to Richard than Amma.

Shock? Twist? I knew it was Amma by the third episode. And I didn’t cheat. The signs of her evil nature are there if you know where to look. Just feel good about the fact that you’ve not been exposed to people like this enough to recognize them.

She was the perfect Adora! They really nailed Alan’s preppy aloof ass as well.

two things:

The control Amma exerted over them (cool girl, rich girl - the other two really wanted to be like her even though she emotionally abused them like at the pool and party).

They did foreshadow it in the show. Camille was talking to the cheerleader gf of John Keene about what was going on, and the cheerleader says something to the effect of “They did it to be popular. Why would anyone do something like that if not to be popular?” Amma was the most powerful girl in school because of her

I won’t delve into the merits/faults of how this played out versus the book (which I’ve never read).

Same, but she’s going to have to compete against Patricia Clarkson as Adora.

I don’t agree with this take. I’ve never read the book and felt like it was pretty obvious that Amma was capable of the murders. She indicated that her friends would do anything for her, she’s manipulative and cruel often, and her motive is strengthened throughout the series. Think Calhoun day when she stops receiving

If you did not suspect Amma, you weren’t paying close enough attention to her and her friends.

i found out today she’s Australian, which was genuinely shocking!

That’s what I said today too: I want to rewatch it for all the clues, and to really enjoy it because at times I was too impatient for the story to unfold in its slow pace.

I thought it was pretty clear why Amma did it. Camille internalized the abuse by her mother, while Amma turned her pain and rage onto others. She was tied in a codependent relationship with her mother and jealous of anyone taking away Adora’s attention. And I already thought it was Amma since last week, when it became

I mean I don’t recall it being much more obvious in the book. They clue you into the fact that something is BADLY wrong with Amma how many times. It’s the viewer/reader’s natural instinct to just think of it as a byproduct of the abuse she deals with, but that doesn’t mean that’s the only possible explanation.

I had read the book and knew the twist on the twist was coming but was still surprised by how little time they left for it. Having read the book made it harder to tell what I was picking up on subtext from the show vs what I was just filling in with book based knowledge.

I’m hoping the actress who plays Amma gets some love during award season.
