An unintended feature of The Office’s gradual humanization of Michael is that there is a measure of truth, or at least aspirational truth in there.

I’m confused. Are the people in ICE upset that they’re not allowed to also make fun of Trump, or that someone is making fun of Trump?

Imaginary characters are the modern equivalent of Shakespearean monologues. They give the character a means to voice their feelings and motivations in ways they would never share organically with another on-screen character, without simply having the character face the camera and talk to the audience.

In their defense, while the Smug Alert was pretty harsh on hybrid car owners, and well, west coasts liberals in general, in the end, they did come out strongly in favor of carbon reduction when they had Stan say something along the lines of “some day, hybrid cars may save us”.

I imagine they were probably intending to say what they usually intend to say: That people who care about things are dumb and deserve to be mocked.

So there’s an even seedier aspect to this than is being reported. I can’t speak for World Patent Marketing per se, but this is a common scam.
