Yeah, goldfish can live for a long time and get quite large. Most people think of goldfish and other fish as disposable pets and put them in fishbowls. Then when their fish dies two weeks down the road they think that it's the fish rather than the inhumane conditions that the fish lived in.

I mean... I once took a hamster to the vet when it looked like she was in distress, which it turns out she was. I shelled out about $150 to have her suffering relieved. I don't think that's too irrational, I think it was the kind thing to do for the poor little animal that was in my care.

My two rats, may they rest in peace, cost me hundreds of dollars in vet bills for their respiratory infections.
