Ya have considered that, but I was already using other outputs from the header. I have tried USB sound cards as well. I have had better luck with those than the built on one.

Last one I tried (with a need for audio) was November last year.. I just installed the latest, on a Pi that I don’t have an immediate need for audio, but it may be worth testing again. The 5 years of torture where they control the hardware is still a pisser though.

They are in general, but mostly because of the different chipsets. Raspberry PI doesen’t really have that excuse. At least not one that lasts 5 years.
