From what I understand, the Kickstarter money is what made them a target. If they hadn’t done that, I think CBS would have left them alone. Once it appeared they were making a profit, CBS had to move in to protect their IP. If they didn’t it would be harder for them to defend the IP in future situations.

Probably the Kickstarter cash, yeah. Intellectual property, as I understand it, is also fairly finicky. If you don’t exercise your rights, you tend to lose them.
