I always thought that the flashback where not temporally linked to the actual real time seasons.

I feel like the show has established the flashback structure and now they feel like they have to do them even if they make no particular sense or contribution to the main plot. I wouldn’t mind if they ditched them altogether, or only used them if there was something relevant to reveal.
