This is just my personal opinion, but if your son wants to get started I would recommend C# (basically Microsoft’s version of Java). It’ll teach him object-oriented programming, where the main tenet is code reusability, and is one of two main languages used in Unity, a very robust game engine that’s free to boot.

Started learning Python this week. It’s very high-level (as in it’s really abstracted from the code machines can understand) and very readable. Just being able to get going almost right away is a nice change of pace from Java.

I just started playing Horizon and while I agree that it deserves all the accolades it’s received, it also does have the benefit of having learned from previous open-world games.
