This is the same problem that Mazda dealt with last decade. They released a concept (Furai) that looked awesome, but the translation of the Nagare design language to production cars was awful. A whole generation of Mazdas looked ridiculous.

I keep seeing this, but in a four door hatch, that location is not really a problem. That pillar is too far back to interfere with shoulder checks at all, and your mirrors should easily catch anyone that far behind you.
