My experiences agree with this article. There's been many a time when a user's email borders on the angry or (more frequently) the passive-aggressive. The majority of times when I pick up the phone and talk to the person live they are significantly more lenient and cooperative.
In context, that goes against the spirit of the article, methinks.

I Imagine the colors of the background image would cause problems. A subsequent poster testifies that color reflections on your subject are quite hard to remove. I suppose this is why Adam used a white bg in the article.
