You realise we "technically" still have prohibition in some locales... I.e. why some counties in Texas are still "dry counties" and alcohol is illegal... Of course the stores right over the county line make a hell of a profit from it.

@Ian Logsdon: Where I live we can throw away pretty much anything we want. Have a sofa to get rid of drag it down to the curb and they'll haul it off, same with washers, driers, hot water heaters, etc. Now while we can't throw out things that are regulated by the EPA (such as batteries, but AC compressors are fine)

@Ian Logsdon: Last I checked pretty much everyone PAYS to have their trash collected every day so it does not cost the city to send it to a landfill. It costs ME, now if they were to say refund a portion of the $26/ton they make off of recyclables off of my bill then I would be fine with the "request" to recycle.
