Just to add to your excellent comment: we don’t have a “lawsuit culture” in France like you have in the US. Even if someone was suing (and its a big if), they would maybe win a few thousand euros... Protection against lawsuits is not that big an issue.

And when you end up going through trash to find something to eat, you're way past the time when you had pride anyway.

What we see in France is an increasing number of people waiting next to the supermarkets’ bins and going through their trash to try to find something to eat. It's a much shittier thing to throw food and force them to do that out of hunger than to give unsold food to charity, especially when they say they don't have…

I was raised as a JW and my mom has been for more than 20 years (still is) and I never heard of that, I mean the confession, and even the lawsuits.

To my first-hand knowledge, this is not how Jehovah’s Witness work at all. You don't get to sin and just go confess your mistakes, get absolved and just go back to doing the same thing. Confession doesn't even exist. What you're describing sounds more catholic to me...
