Very cool! I got started in vintage by collecting vintage slips (and wearing them in the riot grrl fashion in the 90s), then for extra cash starting selling them off. That started my vintage biz! I agree on quality and craftsmanship, the difference is astounding. I recently sold a 1950s Pierre Balmain wool dress and…
Indeed!! Believe me, in my vintage shop I get that stuff ALL the time. 20s is all flappers, 30s is Jean Harlow, 40s is either Rosie the Riveter or Vargas pin up, 50s Marilyn or more pin up, 60s mod and 70s hippie. Oh, yep, 80s....Madonna. Each of those decades had a pretty wide range of looks but people tend to get…
That sounds fantastic! I just got a pastel rainbow crinnie, love it.
They make fake lashes that have this effect, but you can do it yourself as well. http://www.cosmeticsandskin.com/bcb/eyelash-be…
Oh, you mean crinolines!! Well, a lot of my clients wear them and don't care who thinks what! The current "skater dress" trend sort of picks up on that, but shorter and with a higher waist. And yeah, I wish my sister and I were more like Roseanne and Jackie. But I'm more like Roseanne and she's more like Nancy Spungen.
Haha! I love Jackie chic, hope that's what you're rocking.
Me too. I've been digging but can't find any more!
I would love that!
I found this, but I don't see how it would "shape" the cupid's bow. "1920s cupid's bow lipstick: For the perfect Cupid's Bow, cosmetic icon Helena Rubenstein released a "self-shaping lipstick that forms a perfect supid's bow as you apply it." This self-shaping lipstick usually came in red and was sometimes…
Her artist clearly needed this! "Max Factor takes measurements of the actress Marjorie Reynolds' head and face with his 'Beauty Micrometer,' a device he developed to aid makeup artists, 1934. (Keystone-France/Getty Images)"
I thought the same thing. I'd at least like to see that!
A total nod to Gloria Swanson photographed by Edward Steichen, for a 1924 Vanity Fair!
I love how cyclical fashion is! As a vintage fashion dealer I've learned SO much over my 15 years in it, handling so many pieces and seeing construction and the ways more recent eras drew on the past. I find it strange when people say they hate 70s but love 20s/30s, that they can't see the inspiration from the styles…
A bit, in some films I would think? But women in the silent films I've seen were either desperately in love (which this would work for), grieving, scared, in danger, swooning, etc etc. But it really did work with a smile, too! Albeit slightly wistful...
Aww, thanks!
Beaded lashes. Which I kind of want to try but haven't the lifestyle to go with.
In a way, but you have to consider this look stems from actresses having to rely heavily on their eyes to emote the heady romance and dramatic scenes in silent films of the time.
Not sure I'm allowed to say? But Google dorothea and vintage. ;)
I love and love and love! Yet my super mod stuff from the 60s sits and sits on my website..
