The cliffhanger was cheap, but I really think they pulled through with a legit major death this time. There would be zero reason for a cliffhanger if it were a minor character. That would just be mean, and would likely turn off a lot of audience.

There was zero ambiguity with Deanna's death. She was bitten. You die when that happens, unless you're lucky enough to have it be a limb that can be chopped off quickly.
