It's the "good but overrated" effect. A guy who's overrated (and let's face it, it's pretty inarguable that Macklemore has become overrated even if you didn't think he was before) always seems like the worst thing ever even if his work is actually pretty good when you divorce it from the hype.

Interestingly enough, by the 2010 US Census definitions, "white" includes almost the entirety of the Arab, Jewish, and Turkic ethnicities. I find that fascinating, because as a general rule our society DEFINITELY doesn't accept those groups as "white."
