As an American, I'm embarrassed by what our legal system has become. Extortion. Plain and simple. Legal extortion courtesy of lawyers. No wonder lawyers get bad raps.

My favorite settlement was when the lawyers by order of the judge were paid in the same coupons they got for people in the class action.

If they mailed you a coupon as a loyal customer would that be alright to accept? Many of these settlements give you more value if you agree to accept a coupon rather than cash.

Oh, that's a completely valid way to look it at, and I'm not judging you in any way if you do. I'm just saying that it's iffy under my personal code of ethics, which I have no expectation of exactly matching anyone else's and therefore don't ask other people to live by.

But only one of those leads to more money in your pocket ;-)

I'm the same way. I know ten bucks is ten bucks, but I've never had a Red Bull in my life, so I don't feel like taking part in that class action is ethical. I do think it's right on the line though, and if I really needed the money, there are worse things in the world to do.

I'm in a CA Nortel lawsuit now. The settlement rocks, NOT! Hardly worth the effort to look up the information they required.

As others have mentioned, class action lawsuits do virtually nothing for the people involved, and only serve to make lots of money for the lawyers.

Same here, I got a check just last week for an eBay class action for a whopping 21 cents.
