Fiat 850s originally had a 843 cc (51.4 cu in) engine. Since US emissions regulations at the time applied only to engines equal to or larger than 50 cubic inches, US-spec 850s were equipped with a smaller, higher compression engine, displacing 817 cc (49.8 cu in), and sold without any emission gear.
