Too bad Welles didn't preserve his own print, under the assumption that in seventy years there would be technology that allowed instantaneous wide release of movies and also an audience clamoring for directors' cuts generally and his cuts specifically.

James Whale could also move a camera from one place to another. It feels like Freund just bolted Dracula's camera to the floor and stuck the cast in front of it.

"And I'll just keeping cranking up the gas."

SPOILERS:

That's the rare godawful horror movie that my wife has seen but I haven't (in part because she doesn't want to see it again).

I suspect they spent more time talking about Stewart's idea for a real-world X-Men spin-off where he can make women's clothes fall off with his mind. They get dressed, but by then he's seen everything.

That's been on my to-watch list for a while. Blue Ruin (same director) is also streaming (I think on Amazon Prime), and it's likewise a steady escalation of intensely violent craziness.

"Now why didn't I think of that?"

Reading non-bestsellers and being an actual scientist (like a person in a lab coat toiling away from grant funding, not a person who provides explanations of complex subjects in TV) are pretty much it.

There's also the fact that most "nerd" stuff is so mainstream that portraying a character who's into video games and computers would read as clueless pandering. Peter Parker is a high school kid who can't connect to his peers - pop culture consumption has nothing to do with it.

Absolutely, and I realize it's extremely disconcerting to argue "the government has been terrorizing certain people for decades, so in some ways this mess is still the status quo."

His biggest moves so far have been targeted at non-citizens, which is reprehensible but not beyond the pale, and GOP's priorities are mainly related to its longstanding war against women, gay people, and the social safety net, which is likewise reprehensible but also par for the course with a Republican

And the burying buying themselves in shallow graves penthouse apartments behind in Trump Tower.

Mauvais Sang is a delight - the main character angry-dancing to Bowie and then upending a Citroen is basically perfect. Ditto the scenes of shirtless chain smoking old French men.

I rewatched Forgetting Sarah Marshall this past week, and while it's a pretty solid movie, it's remarkable just how slackly paced it is. Besides the fact that Hollywood comedies rely on extended ad-libs to generate laughs, there's also the fact that their plots are bullshit. Clueless (which I also rewatched this

Trump never forgot the fate of ED-209 in Robocop. Hasn't touched a stair since.

Arwyn can take care of herself goddammit!

That's a really nice illustration of the difference between authenticity and realism. Action movies in particular have gottenore focused on simulating "realism" at the expense of characters (or the camera) reacting to outlandish situations in a suitably outlandish manner.

Upvoted for Bloom County reference.
