At the risk of being controversial, David Fincher’s opinion may have certain biases.

There was a film theorist who argued that American movies rely on melodrama to address political conflict - the classic example is Casablanca, which engages with World War II by making it the context for a love triangle between Rick, Ilsa, and Laszlo. In the end, the characters conclude that the war is bigger than

I’m not sure it’s that straightforward. Even with the twist ending, the movie never really manages to undercut Durden’s effectiveness and charisma. Arguably, his populist/anarchist political goals overshadow his melodramatic conflict with the main character. If anything, Durden’s violent populism is presented as a

When I was little Count Floyd was the funniest thing I’d ever seen (I think they had him as a bumper around a cartoon in the US, or else my parents had cooler taste than I recall).

I can’t argue with the “cultural ubiquity” of the characters, but also my kids have no idea who Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are.

Between this show and Girls, Becky Ann Baker deserves a special Emmy for “most fearlessly cringey mom.”

After the sun goes down and the multiplex empties out for the night, obviously.

Well, they can’t call “Love Me Do” a B-side, but they also don’t want to come out and say that their “new” track is a B-side.

It’s really a testament to the writing and acting on this show that they boiled the entire premise down to two lines of dialogue, when Sam says, “Nobody thinks you’re cool you know,” and Lindsey replies, “I know.” He’s just upset, she’s just ashamed, and there’s no pat resolution to the moment.

At this point it’s basically a reference to this oddly designed blu ray cover:

He’s a prolific director, but “he makes movies about other things” doesn’t change the fact that violent masculinity is his directorial signature. Making a movie about a woman in 1974 doesn’t change the fact that Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, The King of New York,

Wait for it....

Blanchett and Hopkins are excellent actors, but neither of them needed their A-game to play, respectively, “evil Galadriel” and “Van Helsing as a Norse god.”

I’m working on a paper about medicine and science in 20th century genre movies, and it turns out that I've been walking around with lots of mental references from Mystery Science Theater.

Who said that?

I’m pretty sure the Rifftrax for Matrix Reloaded is the definitive way to enjoy that movie (if only Kevin Murphy wasn’t such a dick about Lana Wachowski being trans).

What, you don't like movies about violent assholes and/or religion?

He issued that executive order messing with people’s visa status almost immediately after taking office. And nominated Gorsuch. But I guess there wasn't a pandemic yet.
