The Japanese would not have been particularly happy with that. Some of the anger with the US Military bases in Japan and Korea is due to crimes being dealt with in military court under US rules, rather than having the criminals face the Justice systems of the country they are in.
Japan doesn’t have as long sentences as America. They also have much less crime. It’s the Japanese who sentenced them in this case. The max sentence is 10 years. So it’s not really “we” in this case.
