As a cat person and someone who volunteers at a shelter yes please consider an adult cat or bonded pair if you can afford it. A bonded pair would be great since you might be home less hours. Yes kittens are adorable but they require a ton more work and attention. An adult could just be an immediate easy companion.

I swear by volunteerism in this situation. Years ago I made many friends and a boyfriend by volunteering at an animal shelter. It also eventually led to a full time job.
