Erring on the side of not being a dick hurts no one.

If you see a black woman with a fair skinned-blue eyed child, do not ask her if she wants to pick up some “extra” nanny work.

All my life I’ve heard this.

I have (not to me because I am the whitest person out there) but I have overheard it being said to a woman of colour and I cringed on her behalf.

Not only have I heard it - it has been said to me more than once. White women get a tan and love to throw their arm next to mine and talk about how they are “blacker” than me. I don’t even get mad anymore. I am in my 40s and too old to care.

If there were a real list this would definitely be number 1

Oh my god, my makeup was horrible as a teen. Like legit horrible. If I didn’t think I would dox myself, I would post pics. I went through a clown-goth phase and a clown-punk phase and just... ugh. And people gave me shit for it, which is to be expected, but I never got shit from adults (just mean teens).

  • yes we can be friends. NO, that doesn't mean you get to say the N word.

I’m brown and I know this! Do I get bonus points??

Have you actually heard someone say that second bit? About the tan? Because that is patently ridiculous and offensive.

• there’s a very real possibility my family got here before yours but for VERY different reasons

Don’t ever, ever be this guy (he is super-white):

101.) just because a police officer gave you a stern talking-to for speeding in your dads Beemer without his knowledge doesn’t mean you know what it’s like to fear the police.

Also, on the list of things kids can experiment with, makeup is pretty much harmless. I wore some godawful eyeshadow colors and glitter and paste on crystals as a teen and it was a great phase to go through!

“Mouth closed, ears open.”

Right, but I’m getting at the root of why they would even think of making a list.

Y’know, I would actually expect the list was drawn up by black and Latino folks. The intra-group attraction for respectability politics (which is what the material in these lists sounds like it’s made of) is strong, in my experience.

“Wearing too much makeup looks like a clown.”
