This comment section is why I can't get down with mainstream (read:white) feminism.

Well she's black so she doesn't count, see.

Black in America, Black in the UK...

an awesome feminist she is to me. maybe shes not others ppl type of feminist but then again no single person owns feminism. your feminist role model is a personal choice. What i do call bullshit on are the women/men, who scream they are feminists, but wanna write insulting things about her (not just disagree with

At this point Beyonce could get a masters degree in women, and gender studies, pen some interesting articles on beauty and the media, create a non profit program to help young black women identify with their beauty and womanhood, and STILL people would say "That's bullshit, she's pretty, she doesn't get to do those

If by chance you were looking for more reading on womanism, Gradient Lair is a great resource.

Agree on the sentiment, but I'm 90% the WoC who wins in the video is albino. O.o Which, as I mention that, I love that she included her in the visuals for the album. She turns up in a few of the other videos too. Bey really included all shades of blackness in her visuals and really empowers ALL black women here, from

I am black and have only just discovered Womanism. I don't necessarily think I am one, so as of right now, I'm sticking with "feminist" (although perhaps non-mainstream feminist would apply better).

I wasn't saying that. I was being sarcastic about who gets to call herself a feminist. In my opinion, Black women are generally not thought to be "proper" candidates.

Me too. I would call myself a womanist but I feel that is more a term for black women, which I am not. I prefer to call myself an intersectional WOC feminist.

Honestly, I'm finding myself less and less attached to mainstream i.e. white feminism. It's members can't outright block non-white or poor women from feminism like the first wave did, so instead they've created ridiculous parameters/rules on who can be a feminist and try to shut us out that way.

Wait, so the very same people who get upset when a female celebrity doesn't call herself a feminist are denouncing a female celebrity who does??

There is a lot of misunderstanding of what it's like to be black in America in this comments section

Wait, are you really about to try to tell me that the beauty standard isn't incredibly Eurocentric, but is instead, class based? Wuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut.....

Everyone has pressure the be thinner and look a certain way. That's celebrity.

I'm getting real tired of all the shit white feminists will come up with to try to put Beyonce down. She's done a great deal to show how much of a feminist she is, her last album should have been proof enough and yet they persist. On every article about Beyonce there is always someone who questions why she is propped

Also, Bey's from an upper middle/upper class family. She's said it herself. She would have gone to college, had a career, married a doctor, yada yada if she hadn't had the opportunity to become a pop star.

"why can't black women artificially dye their hair blonde too, white women dont have the monopoly on fake blonde hair. "

I remember when I was young I used to feel so self concious about my hair, my butt etc. I think people forget what the Jennifer Aniston loving 90's was like for black women, everything about the way we looked was wrong. When bootylicious came out and people started praising Bey and Jlo's bodies it genuinely changed my

What? Just...no. Those two artists have nothing in common aside from both being Black women who dye their hair.
