They definitely had approval and acknowledgement. The fact that their faces weren't blurred out means that they had to sign a waiver stating that they'd be on TV. And seeing as this was the Oscars (and they probably didn't want any of these people to swear or do something inappropriate), I'm sure they were briefed.
