That's pretty bizarre, I'm not sure what's going on for you there. Is it putting up a message saying "This site is asking for your current location?" Because I've seen that before and it will hold up the query until you respond.

Yea unfortunately, that is a rather annoying limitation of the custom searches. If Chrome finds %s anywhere in your custom search url it requires you to type something after the keyword (that was the trick with the "down" one on the original article, you could just type the keyword since there was no %s in it at all).
