I agree - I know in my RWD (front engine) vehicle, taking foot off the gas while sliding is the last thing you want to do, it'll go out of control and spin around. To get the back end back in line, give it some throttle, and to get it farther out of line, plant your foot hard.

Played it. Completely agree. You also never stop accelerating in reverse IIRC. You can also drive off the map as far as you want. It won't stop you, the world just gets farther away.
