Here’s my thought on how it ends without killing everyone, but still eliminates them from future events in an interesting tie-in ... after transmitting the plans, have the surviving heroes be captured and imprisoned on the death star, possibly even detention block AA-23 and not far from cell 2187. So they survive…

Hoping it ends with the surviving rebels in detention block AA-23 aboard the Death Star ... probably only a few cells away from where a certain princess will be held and escape. And then we will understand why they don’t show up in the future in a most bittersweet way.
