Yeah journalists have given them both the chance to back out of a continuity many many times by asking if the games stand alone, and they always insist there is a timeline.

I'm not sure how much thought was put into this timeline. But as many have said this seem more like a set up for the next Wii U Zelda that unites the three timelines.
